While this strategy can also be successful at the start of the round or after a referee’s intervention, it will not have as much surprise value as at the start and should therefore be used sparingly during the fight. However, an alternative to your waiting for your opponent’s inactivity is to try and make him hesitate when advancing, and the best method for this is pivoting backwards, as shown in the previous chapter. Correctly timed, this is a great technique since your opponent (although stopped momentarily) is committed to going forward and you (assuming that you pivoted correctly) are already primed to push off into the technique (see Pivoting Backwards with Jumping-Punch Counter-Attack sequence).
